It is foolish to speak of Limerick or Dublin in absolute terms. Is Limerick’s unfortunate nickname fair? For most respectable Limerick people, life is pretty normal and free of fear. If a visit to Limerick puts me in danger of being stabbed then a trip to Dublin will see me become a heroin addict by the same logic. The national media is largely Dublin-based and has had it in for Limerick for a long time. Headlines like “Man critical after incident in nightclub” (Dublin) sit beside headlines like “Teenage stabbing in Limerick” (Limerick obviously!). Spot the difference. Cork has had a lot of rough stuff lately and some shocking details revealed in court about vicious happenings on its streets in the wee hours. Where is the tabloid-style nickname there? I think Limerick people have rightly turned their backs on the media over the years and turned their backs on ignorant people who don’t even visit for themselves. Limerick’s thousands of respectable, non-newsworthy, quiet, peaceful citizens have learned slowly that Sam Lynch winning two world rowing titles will always be a footnote whilst any gangland development in an undesirable part of the Treaty city will see the arrival of dozens of half-witted tabloid hacks, pens at the ready. Limerick is not a global tourist attraction. It never will be nor will aim to be. But those who are fair-minded enough to have a look around for themselves some weekend are likely to be rewarded for their efforts. It doesn’t deserve to endure what it has at the media’s unscrupulous hands. Limerick has always had more development potential than Dublin with the broad Shannon as its centre-piece and the proximity and beauty of Clare and Kerry. Maybe jealousy motivates them. I can’t think what else.

In 2003 Dublin had 19 gangland slayings. Limerick had 3.
In 2004 (up to Mar3)Dublin has 2. Limerick has none.
God bless the Dublin media. Why let the statistics get in the way of a good smear campaign?
No journalist has ever been murdered for reporting on Limerick's crime. If only dear auld dubbalin could say the same...

I know you're a fervent Dub, Justin--but the transport is a disgrace, as they say in the pompous Irish Times. The population is small--just a million people--and it's relatively dense, so it should be easy to get around, but it's not. It's okay for getting into or from "town" from a given point. Anything that avoids the city centre, like getting from point A on the northside to point B on the northside seems to be a car problem. And then there are weird cycle paths that suddenly disappear as you hit roundabouts...

Dublin public transport 'not much better than LA'?

bah! I challenge you to traverse any two points in LA without taking 2 busses and 3 hours to get there (the LA transport authorities have a specialty in mis-synchronized timetables). Dublin (or Bombay, or Bangkok) has a long way to go to be as bad as LA for public transport ;)

Thanks, Dixon. Didn't realise you had to pay for the other link--I went straight to it from Google. There is no end to Murdoch's deviousness.

Here's a link to the story on that young ruffian that you don't have to pay for:

http://www.limerick-leader.ie/issues/20031108/news06.html

My morbid curiousity extended as far as a Google search but not as far as paying to read about him.

Seems like young nasty is just carrying on the family business.
