I meant financially generous, Jerry, more than generous in allowing entry. When you seek asylum in Ireland, legal or not, you are (or were) immediately entitled to free housing, welfare, education, and healthcare. Europe generally concentrates more on a social security safety net; the American way is more about making it on your own.

Hmm..With the exception of the small retaining number of American Native Indians the rest of us are immigrants. We each been treated in various ways at different times. Given our numbers today it would seem that we've found fair enough treatment.

It's not that the Irish, or Poles, or whatever the latest wave of immigrants was weren't treated all that nicely. They weren't in places like NYC.

Swedish, Russian, and German immigrants arrived on the priairies and those that lived through the winters and droughs got along quite nicely.

Possibly the reference is to the recent wave of Mexicans into the U.S. Aye, they've not been treated that well, but their numbers make them a somewhat different case. When the Hungarian revolt ended in the 1950's we took thousands of Hungarian refugees. After Vietnam we took thousands of Vietnamese refugees. In fact, historically, more refugees from this or that have found a home in America than anywhere else.

We're mostly all the rejects, outcasts, and misfits from other countries with the percentage of non-caucasian residents recently dipping below 50% for the first time, a trend expected to continue.

America is no longer the white skinned land of descendants of Britain and Western Europe. And I can think of no country more generous over the centuries in accepting immigrants tossed out of their homelands for whatever reasons.

Sorting out the mess that has resulted from the influx of millions of Mexican immigrants is neither as simple as some advocate, nor as complex as thought by others. I suppose we just annex Mexico, but that doesn't seem a popular idea. ;)

It's funny - twenty years ago, the same nasty comments that are made about immigrants (welfare frauds, lazy, unclean, etc.) were made about Travellers. I don't know if it is because people have become more accepting of travellers, or is it because there is only so much hate to go around.

Dervala, I missed out on the happy Christmas greetings, but wanted to wish you and that big-hearted, sharp-minded friend of yours, Ranger Tim, all the best in this new year. Yours is one of the most thought-provoking blogs I read and well-written, too. Thank you. Thank you.
