"shocking sameness" etc.

...Yeah saw this too on returning from London to Shannon lately. Very amusing. Same shock on arriving on streets of London too a year ago!

Them and us is a dangerous situation and one I find ugly. What can these people do when they are denied the right to sell their labour? While the government denies them this basic human right, the few 'real' racists in Ireland hold a very fine hand of cards indeed.

i know i need to let this one go, and tell the good olu dara stories.
but it was new york, now, and i come all the way up the country to be brow-beaten by a room fulla yankees. new york has got good food, now,and the big buildings, and art of the ages, a kalieda-scope of color and form. good music, too, the bars are like a pinata, close your eyes and give em a whack, something worthwhile is liable to fall out.
you just wouldn't expect to drag cross the country, and know more about about fun.

I believe this has recently changed, but they usen't let you buy 'hard liquor' in New York City on a Sunday. It might lead to dancing.

my first night in new york for a long while, and a young lady suprised me with olu dara tickets.
a small blues bar in new york, i'm gonna see olu dara with a pretty girl.
no smoking, drinking is apparently frowned on there, and NO DANCING! to the blues!
lord know i shouldn't be allowed to, but this girl has an angel's grace.
olu dara was cranky for the rest of the show, after they made her sit down.

new york. i swear.

Same guy. I would have described him as a Brooklyn cornetist who discovered he had a salable singing voice and guitar licks. His solo debut _In The World: From Natchez To New York_ (Atlantic 1998) is mesmerizing; can't think of another modern recording so infused with a black New York sense of place. "Harlem country girl, you're so sweet ..."

God, Material, yes! That was Olu riffing horn on that wobbly but infectious funk breakdown on "Memory Serves". Go on, try not to dance.

A Brooklyn singer named Olu Dara? Interesting, have to look him up. There was an Olu Dara who played a hot'n'funky trumpet with Bill Laswell's band "Material" a few decades ago, unlikely that it's the same guy. (Sorry to post such a triviality.)
