Public schools can be turned around, one at a time, provided the central bureaucracy lets go its stifling hold on them. NYC has done so; most of its schools are small and focused, with 3-4 schools per building. This new influx was'nt planned as such, it just happened. It strikes me that while the Irish people see them, they're not quite sure how to deal with it and the social changes that follow. You mentioned white flight. That has'nt really happened........yet. But I know from talking to people that its there below the surface and in all likelyhood WILL happen. If you look to the UK where a white face is in the minority in certain areas, I believe a similar thing will happen here eventually. People complain about immigrants coming into the country yet will use them as their cleaners or casual labour. Comment about how diverse our schools are yet quietly pull the kids out and go elsewhere. Your comment about both public and private schools is right on the button. Somhow I think attitudes will harden as more immigrants arrive.
