Dylan, I know, I'm kind of mortified. I almost went back and changed it to a reference to the surprise root canal that just cost me $2,600. But now it's too late.

Great story, Dervala -- my stomach was clenching in sympathetic fear with you all the way through.

But: You spent *more than $650* on a pair of glasses??

Mark, so glad that NZ is agreeing with you. And bicycling--it's still my daily transport.

Bought a bicycle. Big heavy lump of a thing. Blue. On special.
I found myself remembering things from 28 years ago.
-So, I can't have centre-pull brakes? What? No.
-Mudguards are extra ... Hmmm. And I don't know why. Work is a twenty minute stroll through a fabulous Botanic Garden - a cycle is skittering downhill and screeching (I like to think) to a halt in front of work where there is an industrial powered shower. Which is good. And what's this layer around my tummy, that sure as hell wasn't there the last time I did this!
Late the other morning. Going faster. Around a bend. Leaned in and felt the rear wheel slide. Straightened up and readjusted for a beeline on a foot-high kerb and a hedge corner. Old reflexes made me jump as I hit the kerb. Speculated fleetingly as to the existence of a post within the hedge. There wasn't. Sat in the rain on the pavement laughing uproariously at the indignity of it all.

I like it here.
