I think that you're right that "We’re all screwed, and we know it, and yet beneath the anxiety I detect a few particles of relief." I also think that it's not that we have an "it's not my fault that I'm screwed" mentality (although that is the initial manifestation). I think that it's a sense of relief that we can get off the crazy ride we were on and that we can take back a sense of ownership of ourselves. A bit like junkies who've just found out that there is no more fix, it's gone, and it's going to be incredibly hard, but it can be infinitely better.
