Who's paying attention to the scripts and taking an interest in the quality of the work she gets, harrassing the executives, showing up with lines learned, chatting up the lighting directors and cinematographers so that she shows up well? Who faces down rejection after rejection throughout the auditions?

Joan Crawford worked like a dog, and I bet Rosalind Russell was no slouch. But there were hundreds of girls signed to MGM who were prettier and more "suitable" than Norma Shearer--and she just plain out-worked and out-hustled them.</description>
