@Ezra: The best review of Gladwell I ever read said simply: "The plural of anecdote is not data." But I agree with you that that piece wasn't bad.

Have you read Declan Kiberd's latest book on Ulysses? It brought me back to his wonderful lectures in UCD.

@James: Hi! The Collisons are a rockin' family, all the way down to the dogs. So glad Lily is joining the OpenCoffee scene. I'll be home in mid-March and may even get to stop by if the timing works out.

@John: Thanks for the links! I love to know what local entrepreneurs are up to.

A Malcolm Gladwell piece in the New Yorker a few weeks ago argues that successful entrepreneurs assess risk differently (and are actually risk-averse, counter to common assumption). Worth a read. http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2010/01/18/100118fa_fact_gladwell
[It was the first Gladwell article that hasn't made me want to ball up the New Yorker and throw it across the room; I find his focus on contrarian storytelling at the expense of facts annoying]

I don't know where John is from but I'm guessing Ireland because that's just so typical of the begrudgery innate to our society. Just like Bono said on Oprah one time - "In America you look at the guy in the mansion up on the hill and say 'some day I'm going to be that guy', while in Ireland people look at the guy in the mansion up on the hill and say 'some day I'm going to get that f**ker". So sad but so true.

Beautiful essay Dervala. I was luck enough to meet Patrick's mother for a coffee in Limerick last week and have I, I think, convinced her to come along to OpenCoffee next month. A wonderful entrepreneur in her own right I know she'll get a great kick out of mixing with some of the best 'can do' people in your home town.

Excellent post Dervala, I think your ex's comment best sums it up, “Owning stocks is betting on other people. I’d rather bet on myself than anyone else.”.
If you don't mind, here are a couple of more "neighbours children", who asked, why not? worth a shout out.
Noel and Pat from Murroe, http://www.flylight.ie
Jimmy and Co. from Crecora, http://www.amcsgroup.com

Another curious conclusion I'm making is that there's something in Limerick's environment that fosters the entrepreneurial spirit. That's Patrick's hometown. The 2009 Seedcorn winner coded YourPinpoints in Limerick. And several start-ups in the LEAP incubator centre could also prove their worth as multi-million dollar acquisitions.

These kinds of results suggest small start-ups will help pull Ireland out of its recession.

Yes, John, my friends Cameron, Villy, and Lee are merciless exploiters of my good nature and naivete as they pursue their dark agendas of social justice and productive lives. :-)
